Responsibilities
The APAC Regional Privacy Officer role is to advise the company on a range of privacy, data protection, and security-related legal and compliance initiatives in the Asia region. This role involves advising clients on various legal risks and obligations under global privacy laws and driving high-profile cross-functional initiatives across the business that involve complex legal and/or regulatory issues. The Regional Privacy Officer reports to the Global Privacy Office and implements the privacy strategy in the region. This requires the ability to work independently and with large multi-stakeholder teams.
- Develop and maintain subject matter expertise in areas of data privacy and protection laws and advise on the impact of the same on Rakuten’s business within the Asia region.
- Assist product owners in evaluating the impact of privacy laws, regulatory guidance, and enforcement actions, and other related guidelines on product features.
- Evaluate the impact of legislative, regulatory, legal developments and industry proposals involving legislative privacy and security across Rakuten's services and group companies within the Asia region.
- Drive high-profile and high-impact projects involving privacy analysis and compliance with stakeholders across the business.
- Coordinate with Rakuten’s Global Privacy Office and implement the global privacy policies regionally.
- Be a representative of the Global Privacy Office in the region and a first point of contact for group companies in the region.
- Monitor business developments and privacy compliance within the region.
- Raise awareness with the relevant regional stakeholders about privacy initiatives and promote privacy as a business enabler.
- Liaise with the local, regional, and global stakeholders to promote Rakuten’s privacy initiatives.
- Manage and participate in internal privacy compliance programs and processes to ensure Rakuten meets its obligations under those programs.
- Support businesses in the region with their privacy tasks.
Requirements
- Background in data governance, data privacy, risk management, consultancy or compliance, with at least 5 years of working experience.
- Knowledge of personal data laws and regulations in Singapore; experience in navigating privacy laws in other APAC countries would be an advantage.
- Possess an awareness of how data is captured, stored, integrated and consumed in applications/systems; able to understand operational, business and data processes, controls and risk environment.
- Strong project management and facilitation skills, with the ability to engage and manage different stakeholders.
- Team player who possesses drive, confidence, analytical skills and an eye for details.
