Position Summary
SHEIN is seeking a senior legal counsel (trade and regulatory compliance) who will be responsible for managing the Company’s trade compliance concerns in the APAC (ex-China, Korea and Japan) and Africa regions and working closely with the trade compliance functions, customs and tax teams and regulatory counsels globally. This will include compliance activities such as enabling market access, reporting compliance trends, managing customs queries and investigations, and developing our APAC and Africa trade compliance strategies.
Responsibilities
Work as an integral part of the legal and compliance team to lead comprehensive trade compliance standards.
Ensure trade compliance policies and procedures are thoroughly developed, clearly communicated, and implemented effectively by business partners.
Develop the APAC and Africa trade compliance program.
Work closely with the various teams within the supply chain business and direct business partners as to actions that must be taken to minimize trade risk.
Provide trade compliance standards and other regulatory information.
Perform other duties as assigned or required to ensure trade compliance in exports originating from various regions.
Support the Customs and Tax teams to effectively address customs related issues, queries and investigations.
Work closely with the APAC-Africa regulatory counsel on general regulatory matters, including:
Analysing and responding strategically to regulatory inquiries and investigations in APAC and Africa to mitigate adverse enforcement consequences;
Conducting regulatory scans on trade compliance, consumer product compliance, consumer protection, dark patterns, local presence requirements, intermediary liability in APAC and Africa and analysing potential impact on business initiatives / operations;
Conducting research and advising business teams as required to mitigate regulatory risk exposure and support business initiatives / operations in APAC and Africa.
Skills and Qualifications
Strong proficiency in English is required. Proficiency in Chinese would be advantageous as the role involves regular communication with stakeholders and colleagues based in China.
Experienced lawyer with at least 8-10 years of work experience relevant to trade compliance in APAC.
Thorough understanding of global trade issues, operation of free trade agreements and customs clearance.
Ability to interpret free trade agreements, regulations and standards and to quickly assimilate and assess new information and develop plans to capitalize or react to these requirements.
Exceptional program and project management skills across regions.
Ability to influence people and drive projects to completion under tight deadlines.
Self-starter, entrepreneurial, “roll up your sleeves” attitude.
Experience and capacity to lead multi-jurisdictional projects and coordinate external advisors.
Ability to deliver results, both as an individual contributor and as a member of the APAC-Africa and global legal and compliance teams.
Flexibility to accommodate communication required across different time zones for collaboration with different parts of the group.
Ability to make quick decisions while exercising good judgment.
Have a strong work ethic, attention to detail and sense of professional accountability.
Preferred experience
Experience with trade compliance issues in Africa
Experience working in or across from trade/customs regulators
E-commerce marketplace experience
